White LED Backlighting

Global Lighting Technologies Inc. has introduced a new white LED backlight assembly for 7 in. TFT LCDs, according to a report from the SPIE Newsroom. The RoHS compliant assemblies utilize the company’s MicroLens molded light guide technology to provide high brightness with fewer LEDs, reducing part count and cost. They are ideal for applications such as portable DVDs, automotive GPS and DVD systems, and other daylight-readable displays used in cars and minivans.

A key feature of this product is the MicroLens pixel-based light extraction technology, which molds micro-optical elements into a light guide, delivering more collimated light and increasing the efficiency of the optical system. The LCD backlight utilizes advances in LED technology combined with 3-D optical design, proprietary MicroLens pattern development software, precision manufacturing equipment, and in-house tooling design and fabrication. The custom-designed, fully integrated modules are easy to install into a host application.

The backlight assemblies are available with traditional (phosphor) white LEDs, and an RGB version is under final development. Pricing for the MicroLens LCD backlight depends on brightness required and quantity.
