TI INTRODUCES LED BACKLIT DLP RPTV WITH 100,000:1 CONTRAST RATIO
At CES 2007 in Las Vegas, Nevada USA, Texas Instruments (TI) introduced an LED backlit Digital Light Projection (DLP, a Texas Instruments trademark) Rear Projection Television (RPTV). The TV boasts an impressive 100,000:1 contrast ratio, Digitimes reported. TI says that the product concept is enabled by the company’s DLP chipset which is optimized to drive LEDs to a contrast ration of 100,000 :1 and beyond. Digitimes also reported that LED illumination increases the color saturation to nearly 140% of the NTSC TV standard. Samsung Electronics reportedly displayed its latest DLP TV models based upon the TI chipset during CES this year, Digitimes said. According to Digitimes, Samsung began shipping DLP TVs in 2006, and additional manufacturers are expected to introduce models in 2007.
