PowerSecure International Inc. has announced that Walgreens will purchase the companys state-of-the-art green EfficientLights LED lighting technology for refrigerated cases, according to a report in LEDs magazine.

The fixtures will be installed in the majority of Walgreens new store openings in 2009. EfficientLights says that Walgreens’ investment will reduce their refrigerated cases lighting energy use by 70%.

The new technology also reduces ongoing maintenance costs associated with traditional fluorescent lighting, extends the life of the lighting solution a minimum of five-fold, and eliminates the disposal of fluorescent bulbs, which contain mercury.

For the stores expected to be equipped in 2009, the EfficientLights green technology will save 45 million kilowatt hours over the next 10 years, which is equivalent to removing the CO2 emissions from the electricity use of over 4,000 homes.
