Attendance at LED EXPO 2009 Jumps 70%

Seoul, June 20, 2009 -- Confounding expectations that a down economy would dampen industry enthusiasm, attendance at LED EXPO and FPD Korea 2009 jumped 70% over the previous year to more than 26,000 when the show was held May 20-23 at KINTEX, Korea.

LED Expo Secretariat president Ok-Hyun Mun credited the upswing to the worldwide surge of interest in green, energy efficient technologies and a Korean government drive to make the country a powerhouse in LED production. Seung Woo Lee of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy and a speaker in the Expos Technical Seminar program reinforced Muns assessment stating that it is a national goal to place Korea among the top three LED producing countries in the world as quickly as possible. Korea currently ranks number six in worldwide LED production with 8.3 percent of world market share. Lee predicted 30 percent annual growth for the LED industry between 2008 and 2015.

The strong turnout filling the aisles at the LED EXPO 2009 seemed a reflection of the Korean governments optimism. Attendance was also up at the three day conference which is a signature of the LED EXPO. The conference is an annual platform for presentations on the latest in new technology developments and future industry direction. In 2009 a Short Course program was added to the Technical Seminars and Executive Forum of the Conference. The Short Courses were extended two-hour sessions that allowed speakers to delve deeper into subject areas that are at the cutting edge of industry development.

Highlights of the conference program included presentations by blue LED inventor Dr. Shuji Nakamura and world famous lighting designer Ms. Motoko Ishii. Speakers also included Dr. Michael Lebby, the president of OIDA, Prof. Moo-Whan Shin, professor of Myongji University, and representatives of top global industry players such as Samsung LED, LG Display, Wooree Lighting, Toyota, Toshiba, Panasonic, Sanyu REC, Osram and Epistar.

Looking to the future Mun predicted LED EXPO and FPD Korea’s star would continue to rise. Mun noted the increasing use of Led-based backlighting for all sorts of displays from large screen TVs to handheld mobile devices. The convergence of the LED and display industries represents tremendous growth potential for both segments, he said. As one of the only shows worldwide that focuses on these two crossover industries, “we are in the right space at the right time,” beamed Mun.
