[Interview] Moo-Hwan Sin, a Head of Korea Society of Optoelectronics (KSOE) Says, LED Industry Should Foresee Upcoming Trend

SEOUL, Korea (AVING) —  LED EXPO 2011, the world first and the biggest among Korean trade expos in LED, is held in KINTEX, Ilsan, from June 21 to 24. AVING met Moo-Hwan Sin, the senior person of LED EXPO 2011, a Professor of Yonsei University, a head of Korea Society of Optoelectronics (KSOE) and a member of Presidential Committee on Green Growth (PCGG), and heard about current state of LED industry, this expo and seminar from him.

Q. How are sizes and stance of Korean LED industry in global market? And, what are necessities to secure competitiveness within the global market?

Experts expect global market size for LED industry will breakthrough about $ trillion in 2015 and double in 2020. Global market shares of Korean LED products are 12~3%. However, I expect Korea to have competitiveness also in global market if they can graft base technology with LED field because Korea is a powerful nation in display technology.

Q. What is LED original technology to be invested more at this point?

Understanding trend is important in LED industry. For LED lightings, level of contribution for each component which cost to production will be different from now on. Currently, a unit price for chip occupies the highest among unit prices, but as technology in high efficiency anti-heat materials develops its roll will be gradually growing.

Q. Whats a noticeable enterprise within LED industry?

There e small-and-medium enterprises in Korea having original technology for components with potential to heighten level of contribution of unit price in LED products, such as anti-heat materials. If small-and-medium businesses with high technology like Coresem and Anycasting get backing from government and have global competitiveness I think they will be able to contribute greatly to Korea.

Q. What do you think about Chinas recent rapid growth in LED industry?

Chinas still lacking a lot of things in technology. Nevertheless, the reason for China to get attentions is the biggest market size in the world.

Its also important that 80% of raw materials needed for LED industry are concentrated in China. For these reasons, I expect China to rocket as a strong nation in LED field within 2~3 years.

Q. In terms of green technology, whats a correlation between LED and solar cell?

LED is a semiconductor element to light with accepting electricity whereas solar cell generates electricity through solar heat. But they have a common ground in reducing carbon compared to existing technology and they e also useful for nations with high LED technology to develop solar cell.

For both fields technology to control heat is important. So, in nations with advanced technologies concentrated investment in high-efficiency thermoelement has been vitalizing.

Q. How do you see the trend in LED industry will change?

In Korea, major conglomerates like Samsung and LG have virtual monopoly in LED TV market. Experts see the biggest market to utilize LED field will be illumination, not display. There should be more advanced technology to make LED products substitute for existing lightings like light bulb, but I feel the lack of concentrated investment for technology.

Q. In LED EXPO 2011 seminar, whats a program especially worth noticing?

This seminar differentiates from general academic seminar, in terms of close relation with industry. So every seminar deserves to get notice.

Dividing in sections, on the first day policies and technologies of major companies in LED field are introduced. From Japan, a leading nation in LED industry, professor Amano Hiroshi from Nagoya University will speak about LED policy and technology level of Japan. Wu Ling, a secretary general of NSLEPO, will represent China, an important nation in market, and speak about technology and strategic situations of China.

On the second day LED experts give lectures about core details in technology. Besides, illumination designer will give a lecture about designs of LED products. And program about OLED, an important technology along with LED, will also be available.

Q. What do you expect from LED EXPO 2011?

LED EXPO 2011 is the first LED expo in Korea with a long history in the world. The reason why the EXPO is important is that it can be a great channel to learn about advanced foreign technology for Korean and global companies. Besides in terms of technology, businesses can have opportunities to enter into foreign market because they can learn LED policies of foreign buyers and leading nations. So government investment and support for LED EXPO 2011 is highly needed.
