Researchers from Osram are claiming record-breaking performance for an LED spotlight including a luminous intensity of 124,000 cd at 7.5-degree coverage angle.
Osram AG, the Germany-based lighting manufacturer, has reported a laboratory measurement of 124,000 cd for an LED spotlight with a coverage angle of 7.5 degrees. The company claims that this luminous intensity is a record for an LED lamp. Laboratory results for the LED lamp include warm-white correlated color temperature (3000K) and good color rendering (Ra=92, R9=97). The company claims the performance rivals that of high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps.
As a comparison, a 70W HID spotlight with reflector can typically achieve a luminous intensity of 82,000-cd with a 9-degree coverage angle.
At one-meter distance, the company reports LED spotlight illumination levels of 124,000 lux; at five-meters distance it is 5000 lux. Power consumption is 60W.
In order to attain these metrics, the LED, model UX:3 from Osram Opto Semiconductors, uses advanced phosphors and a buried n-contact structure to enable higher quantum efficiency at higher drive currents. The luminous flux of the LED spot in continuous operation is 4075 lm.
The LED spotlight is designed for architectural lighting, studios and shop illumination. The expected lifespan of 50,000 hours reduces maintenance cost and the inconvenience of installing new lamps at great heights, for example in churches and castles. Since LEDs do not emit UV or IR illumination, they are compatible with park areas and museums.
