Designed to reduce electricity costs for outdoor lighting, the newly patented GE Lighting controller brings dimming capabilities to LED and HID outdoor fixtures.

Designed to reduce electricity costs for outdoor lighting, the newly patented GE Lighting controller (US Patent 8,038,481) brings dimming capabilities to LED and HID outdoor fixtures. With this controller, end users can turn the light fixtures on or off and adjust the light output from 10-90%.

The controller attaches to the fixture with a patented turn-and-lock receptacle that is compatible with current photocells. Two additional connections within the receptacle pass the dimming-control signals from the controller to the dimming LED driver or ballast in the lighting fixture.

The dimming controller was designed for use with the company’s Evolve LED Cobrahead luminaires, which feature advanced LED optical systems for improved horizontal and vertical uniformity, reduced glare and improved lighting control.

Named Best in Class by the US Department of Energy in the Next Generation Luminaires Design Competition, the Evolve LED Cobrahead can yield up to a 50% reduction in system energy compared with standard HID systems for some roadway applications. Service life is up to 11 years (based on a 50,000-hour rated life, 12 hr/day operation), which is 4x the service life of HID fixtures.

When the controller is paired with LED systems, such as the Evolve LED Cobrahead, end users will realize an additional 7.5% in energy savings.

The controller also is compatible with HID systems, allowing the light output of the fixtures to be reduced by 50% during low-traffic times.
