International participation jumps at LED EXPO 2006

LED EXPO continued its rise in 2006 as one of the world’s premier exhibitions for LED applications and production equipment. Exhibiting companies increased by 22% over 2005 to a total of 176. International exhibitors were up an even higher 26%.

Commenting on the show’s growth, Ok—Kyun Moon, director of LED EXPO Secretariat, noted the importance of attracting quality attendees to keep exhibitors coming back and new exhibitors signing up. “People that come to LED EXPO are serious about business, he said. He referenced a joint promotion that LED EXPO undertook with KOTRA (Korea Trade Promotion Corporation) to bring more international buyers to the show in 2006. The program attracted an additional 150 buyers from 25 countries, he reported.

The well-established LED EXPO Seminar is another major show attraction. The subject areas this year were LED standardization, packaging and power systems. A stellar speaker roster of industry and academic authorities from Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia and the USA drew more than 330 attendees, an increase of 27% over 2005, to the two-day conference. Lead off speaker Dr. Michael Lebby, president of the US-based Optoelectronics Industry Association, painted a positive picture of future growth in the LED industry. “The emergence of white LEDs is beginning to open up huge new opportunities in LED based technologies,” he said. “The industry has grown quickly over the past 10 years to a total of nearly $4 billion in 2005, and is expected to grow to over $8 billion by 2010.”

Typical of the innovation driving this growth is LG Innotek, one of the exhibitors at LED EXPO 2006. LG Innotek displayed its new patented process for vertical and high power LEDs. “LG Innotek does it all,” said Jang-Hyuk Oh, Assistant Manager of the company’s Overseas sales Group, “from chip to package.” The company presented a wide range of products for applications from general illumination to automotive to mobile appliances.

LED EXPO is a wonderland of new and exciting LED applications. Dennis Kornegay, chief technology officer of i24P, came to the show looking for “something flashy” for a new hotel display for the Las Vegas strip. For such seekers of illumination excitement, LED EXPO is the place to be. LED 2006 offered a product bonanza of LEDs for indoor/outdoor signs, automotive lighting, POPs, floor panels, emergency lighting, street lighting, architectural lighting, mobile appliances, and more.

LED EXPO 2006 also continued its side by side presentation with the International Flat Panel Display EXPO.  “The complimentary nature of the shows is a two-for-one bonus that is another big draw to exhibitors and attendees both,” said LED EXPO’s Moon. In 2006, International FPD Expo launched its own full day conference program. The conference focused on manufacturing solutions that are driving the phenomenal growth in the FPD industry.
